General Questions

  • Acupuncture is a practice from traditional Chinese medicine that involves inserting fine, disposable needles into specific points on the body. The aim is to regulate the flow of "Qi" (energy) and promote healing. From a Western perspective, acupuncture stimulates the nervous system, encouraging the release of endorphins, serotonin, and other biochemicals that support pain relief and relaxation.

  • There are several styles of acupuncture, none of which should be painful when provided correctly and safely. A slight prick may be felt when a needle is inserted, often followed by something that may feel like a dull ache or a numb tingle.

  • The number of sessions depends on your individual condition and treatment goals. Acute issues may require fewer sessions, while chronic conditions often benefit from a more consistent treatment plan e.g. weekly.. This will be discussed during your initial consultation.

  • Acupuncture can address a wide range of health concerns, including chronic pain, stress, anxiety, fatigue, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, and more. Every treatment plan is tailored to the individual.

In Chinese medicine, we focus less on the name of the condition and treat symptoms. Every treatment plan is tailored to the individual.

The variability or ‘heterogeneity’ of acupuncture treatments has made it more difficult to prove its effectiveness in medical research. In 2017, the Acupuncture Project compiled research relating to acupuncture’s effectiveness on specific conditions. In a snap shot:

    • Management of pain, stress and fatigue related to some autoimmune disorders, in consultation with other treating health practitioners.

    •  Management of pain, fatigue and nausea related to many chronic diseases.

    •  Management of vomiting or nausea arising from chemotherapy.

  • Acupuncture is broadly considered a safe procedure. As with all health practices, some patients may experience adverse reactions. A qualified practitioner like Holly must follow procedures to ensure that acupuncture is provided hygienically e.g. sterile-single use needles and patient safety is prioritised.
